the hoop factory

Groovy Tool

Karen measuring the length of the tube - 10 feet

a coupler connects the tubing

we heated up the ends of the tubing, to make it easier to press the coupler into the pipe

What's does a hula hoop factory look like? You need two worker bees, 50' of Polyethylene Piping, PE pipe connecters, a cutter, a pot of hot water and some electrical tape. Oh yes, and some cookies and tea ;-)

The piping is irrigation pipe - found at Rona or Home Depot. Dave bought Karen 10' of PEX (if I remember correctly) and that hoop turned out well too. The cutter tool looked good, but we either didn't figure out the trick or it was the wrong tool, so we had to be GoGo Gadget alias McGyver and used a bread knife , which surprisingly worked! The tool prepared a groove - the knife did the rest. I feared a little for our hands, so doing so you definitely have to practice mindfulness!

We used 3/4" piping, but 1" piping also works. It's easier to keep the 1" hoop up, but you might pay with some bruises.

Karen suggested to make 10' hoop and I must say they hoop well! I have made them wider before too - up to 13' feet - you got to try it all out until you find the size you like best!

For decoration we used electrical tape, but there is all kinds of funky tape available. Larissa decorated one with wool string, which looks fantastic. She also found coloured hockey tape somewhere around Edmonton, it's a little stickier than electrical tape, so easier to move up and down.

not only a rainy day in Calgary...

Spiderman III the most expensive film in history. 350 Mio $. Wow. I guess I better pay my 15$ and go and see it, to help them recover the cost.

Clean Calgary

Last month, Forbes Magazine released a list of the “25 cleanest cities” based on the following criteria:

Sanitation
Energy production and consumption
Waste management (landfills, recycling)
Transportation infrastructure
Logistics infrastructure
Air quality
Water quality
Ground quality

To view the list, click
here. Calgary placed first!

This is puzzling: How can Calgary be the cleanest city based on the criteria above?

Calgary's electricity comes from coal plants;
Calgarians use 3 times the amount of water than the average Austrian;
There are two (!) places in Calgary (one of which is Ikea) where you can recycle batteries;
City recycling does not include plastics;
City recycling does not include composting;
Unless you are on one of the two lines of the LRT, public transportation has lots of room for improvement (e.g in my case: driving to work 25 - 40 min; cycling to work 45 min; taking public transportation to work 60 -90 min).

makes me wonder...

Lion, Eagle, and why is so much smoke coming from the man holes??? Das letzte Foto ist fuer Emil: ein Mercerl mit Capitol im Hintergrund :)

It must be the capital city feeling; enjoying fauna and architecture, many times I was reminded of Vienna.

Lake Michigan

Last week I was in Michigan again - this time I explored Lake Michigan and went for a walk on the beach. It definitely doesn't feel like a lake, but rather like an ocean. I found myself looking out for dolphins or whales, still in baja mode ;-)

Yoga Mat Alert

Next time you are shopping for a yoga mat, make sure it's PVC free.

USGBC published a report that makes it clear that PVC, also commonly known as vinyl, is not a healthy material. A proper accounting of the human health impacts of PVC across its life cycle, including disposal issues and occupational exposure, finds that PVC leads to the release of dangerous quantities of dioxin and other carcinogens. The report authors found that, “When we add end of life with accidental landfill fires and backyard burning, the additional risk of dioxin emissions puts PVC consistently among the worst materials for human health impacts…”

Most regular yoga mats contain PVC. Mine included. I won't throw it out, as one of the issues is disposal, but I will certainly keep this in mind, if I buy another one. The yoga journal recommends a few alternatives here.

Washington DC

Reagan's assassination attempt was at the Washington Hilton Hotel

Capitol - Washington DC

I am more an American than a Canadian these days. Just arrived in the capital.

The taxi driver was so kind to point out monuments on the way to the hotel, i.e. the Lincoln Monument, Arlington National Cemetary, Washington Monument, the Pentagon, Air Force Memorial,...so I already had a little bit of a sightseeing tour :)

It certainly is a pretty city and reminds me of Europe: lush vegetation, old buildings and lots of sculptures.

The taxi driver also told me that I am staying at the hotel where Ronald Reagan got shot in 1981. I googled it - and he's right - crazy!

Wenn du es eilig hast, gehe langsam.

Danke fuers Packerl, Maeri - ist gut angekommen!

Hennes and Mauritz

Kitty Cat Camouflage

I discovered the H&M in San Francisco; Emeryville to be concise. The bay area is certainly a conglomerate of cities!

I went a little crazy at Hennes and Mauritz. I saw so many things that i liked! I must be European :) I tried on a few of Madonna's pieces, but none of those yelled "Yes" at me. Still, I got more than I needed. I am glad I brought an extra backpack on my trip!

Success Comes in Cans...

Success comes in cans. Failure in can'ts.

Golden Gate

You know, you are in the Bay Area
  • when your hotel room shampoo is an Aveda product
  • when you hear " The Cure" and a talk show about the "fabric the universe is made from" on the radio
  • when nutritious food is main stream
